“Travel and change of place impart new vigor to the mind.” ― Seneca

This is the second of a two part series on ways to support good health when you travel. Be sure to read last week’s article if you haven’t already.

Even when taking a much needed break for rest, relaxation, and fun it’s a great idea to maintain healthy routines and habits while you’re away. Use the following tips to help you stay on track when traveling.

Sleep
Getting a good night’s sleep is always important and when you’re traveling you want to feel rested every morning so you have the energy to enjoy all the activities you have planned.

For a good night’s sleep try the following:
  • Set the thermostat at a comfortable temperature. Usually a little cooler is better.
  • Make sure the room is very dark and as quiet as possible.
  • Use a white noise machine or an app like Sleep Pillow to drown out unfamiliar noises.
  • Leave approximately a 2 hour window between your last meal and the time you go to bed.
  • Apply essential oils to the bottoms of your feet or spray on your pillow before bed. Some of my favorites are Lavender, Stress Away, Peace & Calming, and Cedarwood.
Sleep Spray
  • 12-15 drops essential oil, pick from those mentioned above
  • 1-2 tsp witch hazel
  • Distilled water to fill
  • 2oz glass spray bottle
  • Mix all ingredients in bottle. Shake well before use. Spray onto pillow before bed.
Stress
Vacation is supposed to be relaxing but travel can be stressful. Here are simple ways to alleviate unwanted stress.
  • Deep Breathing Exercise - Inhale through your nose for 4 seconds. Hold the air in your lungs for 4 seconds. Exhale through your nose for 4 seconds, expelling all the air. Repeat as necessary.
  • Get some exercise.
  • Read or take a warm bath.
  • Use essential oils such as Valor, Peace & Calming, Stress Away, or Lavender aromatically.
Wellness
As much as going on vacation and taking a break from everyday routine can be super beneficial, it does bring you in contact with lots of people and germs. Simple ways to stay above the wellness line are getting enough sleep, staying well hydrated, washing your hands frequently, and using hand sanitizer.

Be Well Roller
Support wellness when traveling with this roller. Roll it on your feet and along your spine at night before going to sleep.
  • 10ml roller top bottle
  • 10 drops Lemon
  • 5 drops each Frankincense, Oregano, Tea Tree, Thieves, and Peppermint essential oils
  • Fill with a carrier oil.
For children 3-8 years old, cut the recipe by ¼-½ depending on how sensitive their skin is.

Exercise
Maintaining your normal exercise routine can be a challenge when you’re on vacation. Think about the activities you plan to do, and participate in, before you leave and pack the necessary clothes and shoes so you can be active while you’re away.
Additional ideas:
  • Walk in the airport while waiting for your plane to leave
  • Stand up and move on the plane during long flights
  • Get out of the car at a rest stop, town or city you pass through and walk around a little. Schedule these breaks into your itinerary
  • Resume your normal exercise regimen when you arrive at your destination and walk whenever possible
  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator
Essential Oils
Essential oils provide a natural solution for many wellness issues. The following can be helpful when you travel.
  • Thieves to provide immune support
  • Lavender, Peace & Calming or Stress Away may relieve stress and support relaxation
  • Ginger, Peppermint or Frankincense may help with motion sickness
  • Peppermint, Frankincense, or Sage may alleviate mental fatigue
  • Peppermint, Lemon or Valor may help with physical fatigue
  • DiGize may provide relief from intestinal discomfort
Note: Oil bottles, 5ml or 15ml, are small enough to take on a plane.

Ways to Use
  • Apply topically to wrists, neck below the ears, or to the bottoms of feet
  • Open the bottle and inhale a few deep breaths
  • Wear a diffuser bracelet or necklace
  • Apply to a neck pillow
  • Use a car or hand-held diffuser
Reapply every 4 hours or as needed
